The Center for Lens Arts at the J
I’m teaching a series of workshops in 2026 at the brand new Center for Lens Arts located in the charming town of Lynden, Washington (near Bellingham and Vancouver, B.C.). We’ve built a brand new modern darkroom with eight fully equipped workstations. In addition to classes, the facility is available as open studio rental. Of particular note, our Epson 5370 printer is calibrated for making digital negatives, making it possible for digital photographers to dive into darkroom printing without needing to learn how to create their own printer profiles. The Center is located within the lovely Jansen Art Center, a well-established multi-disciplinary at center.
Digital Negatives for Silver Gelatin
Come learn how to make negatives from your digital files and then print them in the darkroom. It’s fun, creative and gives a distinctly different look than an inkjet print. The workshop is one day of in-depth Photoshop preparation and outputting negatives plus one day of darkroom time using several different papers. You will need a working knowledge of Photoshop and a laptop to use for image prep. Our Epson 5370 printer is calibrated with a digital negative profile, and so there is no need for you to learn the complexities of creating these profiles. No prior darkroom experience is needed. Register directly with the Jansen Art Center.

Silver Gelatin Lith Printing, the Magic of Chemistry
Lith printing is a mad scientist offshoot of conventional silver gelatin printing. Most of the work here on my website is lith. We’re going to take a non-standard very high energy developer and use it to create colors, textures and tonal ranges that are impossible to achieve by any digital means. Long exposure and development times, various chemical additives, bleaching and toning all add up to making one-of-a-kind prints. In this workshop you will be able to work from camera negatives or digital negatives. We will experiment with a contemporary paper as well as vintage papers from Agfa, Kodak and Slavich. Register directly with the Jansen Art Center.
